Planning Approved/ On Site

The design intention is to sympathetically update the existing stables building and add a sensitive contemporary extension which sits lightly against the heavy stone building. This simple, sensitive addition enhances and celebrates the existing building. Whilst connecting it to the surrounding natural environment.

The existing stables is a two storey stone rubble building at the north end of the site. It sits into the slope of the site and steps up this slope in to two parts. The existing building and its features will be retained as much as possible. The internal walls and roof insulated with the main structural elements left visible. Again making the existing building functional whilst retaining it's character and features.

The extension will read as a light weight glazed timber structure that is sunken around the back corner of the stables. The main part of the addition is transparent and sits lightly against the exposed large blank stone wall of the rear (west) elevation of the stables. This enables the stable building to still be clearly read and visible. This and the contrasting materials of timber and stone creates a clear distinction between the old and new and enhances the existing stables. The locally sourced timber cladding and green roof help root the building into its natural surroundings. The vertical timber cladding and regular openings allude to the trees and woodland in the area.
